Boutique Appreciation: Beautifully patterned decorations created with 3D printing

Cyprus is a sunny Mediterranean island country with a history dating back to ancient Greece. These roots still affect their modern achievements in culture, art and architecture. Michail Georgiou of the University of Nicosia in the recent advanced CAD course combines tradition and technology to lead students to create geometrically shaped 3D printed patterned decorations.

Participants in the course first created a 2D geometry before starting the main task. Next, they used these graphics to create 3D patterns on the Rhino 3D/panel tool and transferred them to a flat surface of 125 mm x 125 mm and a maximum height of 25 mm.

Using the knowledge gained in advanced CAD courses, students designed 18 tiles with a variety of geometric checkerboards with clear edges, undulating undulations, rough surfaces and organic forms. With the help of the ZMorph multi-tool head 3D printer at the University of Nicosia, they turned their bold ideas into reality.

Each tile took an average of nine hours to print, using a 1.75 mm plastic extruder and white ABS plastic. With the help of Voxelizer software, the students optimized the prints so that the items did not require any extra support, but relied on the strength of the bottom to support them.

Once manufactured, these 3D printed patterned decorations designed by Nicosia students have become proof of their creativity, which will even impress the ancient Greek art deco masters. It is understood that this amazing project is the result of the collective work of second-year students, and we should pay tribute to their creativity and craftsmanship.
