This newly developed test process works by analyzing changes in adipose tissue around the artery. The researchers say that when fat is close to an inflamed artery, the fat becomes thinner, with less fat and higher moisture. Using the CT Fat Attenuation Index (FAI), the researchers found signs of inflammation in existing CT scans.
Perivascular FAI uses CT imaging of adipose tissue around the coronary arteries to assess fat cell size and fat content. Larger, more mature adipocytes exhibit greater lipid accumulation, which is inversely related to FAI. Inflammation reduces lipid accumulation and slows down adipocyte differentiation. Unstable plaques after myocardial infarction have larger perivascular FAI values ​​than stable plaques, and FAI values ​​are greatest directly adjacent to inflamed coronary arteries. Perivascular FAI testing may be a useful, non-invasive method of monitoring vascular inflammation and the development of coronary artery disease.
This indicator can identify stable coronary atherosclerotic plaques or ruptured plaques in patients with recent heart attacks. They also found that they can track changes in fat around the blood vessels over time, allowing doctors to detect early signs of disease and prevent them with interventions such as cholesterol-lowering statins.
More research is needed before researchers can master this method to predict future heart attacks and save lives. Coralambos Antoniades, an associate professor of cardiovascular medicine at Oxford University, said: "If this can be confirmed in larger studies, then an extra option will be provided in addition to standard CT angiography.
