The reconstructed modern architecture of Makalu Island

The design strategy of the project is to dismantle all the non-original structures added to the building over the years to emphasize the essential characteristics of the house from the floor to the furniture. After the demolition was completed, a new modern element was placed in the building. The contrast between new and old, smooth and rough injects new vitality into the home, allowing traditional architecture to be interpreted and presented in a contemporary perspective.

The kitchen is hidden inside the wall to enhance the purity of the arched space while also increasing the flexibility of the space. The existing niches have been enlarged to accommodate appliances such as refrigerators, ovens and dishwashers, as well as tableware, food and cleaning utensils.

The living room was first emptied to emphasize the original furniture and new additions in the building. The lime floor replaces the non-original cement floor tiles, restoring the material characteristics of the building and enhancing the connection between indoor and outdoor. The vaulted ceiling is treated in a traditional way: quicklime brings a smooth, pure and bright white surface. Rotatable luminaires convert the space from the kitchen to the living room.

The original cement floor tiles were replaced with local hand-made terracotta tiles to bring a warm and peaceful atmosphere to the interior. The window opens to the rear, achieving air convection. The Mallorcan-style bed was preserved and became a core element in the room. The height of the bed allows the user to fully enjoy the sea view.
