From scratch: What happens when the kindergarten does not have toys

In a kindergarten in Bavaria, the teachers came up with a bizarre idea: How would the children react if all the toys in the kindergarten were collected?

Out of curiosity, everyone came up with this idea and started to try it. I didn't think this turned out to be a famous project.

The questions, concerns, and anxieties raised by people at the time were all sorts: What practical significance does this radical move have? On the other hand, from the nervous expression of adults, they realize that this is not a trivial matter. Afterwards, the nursery school did a lot of work. Plush toys, plastic toys, building blocks... All toys were transported to the basement and piled up. Even the dolls were covered with quilts.

The next morning, the children came to an empty kindergarten. In the first 10 minutes, the atmosphere was slightly ambiguous, with bare floors, empty walls, and a few pieces of furniture. The children were awkward and uneasy, and they were completely overwhelmed. In front of the camera, they showed a shy expression for the first time. On this day, the kindergarten teachers did not have any preparations. Although they finally got liberated from the toy completely, it was uncomfortable to do nothing at all. Everyone naturally naturally waits for something to happen. But what exactly can an empty house do? The children sat on the table, shaking their legs idly. Suddenly, everyone found that the sweater of a child was rather unique and the pattern of the house above was vivid and interesting. So someone proposed to raise the chair and put the quilt on it. In this way, the children played happily. At first, it was very noisy, and it took a few days to reach an unbearable point, but it gradually improved. The order of the game was smoother, the dialogue and listening between children increased, and the interaction between boys and girls also appeared frequently. At the same time, the role of kindergarten teachers is diminishing. They strongly feel that there are usually no need to do things that constantly guide the game, decide and control the time.

At the parent conference two weeks later, parents reported their children’s surprising performances at home: Some sent home toys to the storage room; Some had increased their sleep; There was a particularly anorexic little girl who had a sudden appetite. open. They said that the relationship between children and grandfathers and grandmothers was more intimate in the past few weeks because they finally experienced the situation where ancestors had no toys in the past. Prior to this, the old people would not have to send toys if they wanted to have grandchildren and grandchildren happy. Now they are reminded of some of the little tricks of the year, and they can't be used to playing props.

The six weeks agreed in advance soon passed. We asked the children's opinion: Is it willing to liberate the toys in the basement? They replied that they were willing, but do not let it go all of a sudden. We held several seminars to let children talk about the experience without toys. When asked what to do in the future, some children would like to come back at once.

What social educators want to observe is how the child feels enjoyment without external stimuli, while testing the child's inner self-control, independent thinking, and the degree of independent behavior.
