The world's first corn plastic bottled water listed
According to CBC News, a Montreal-based company said that they assisted a US company in Colorado to develop the first biodegradable bottled water container.
Biota Spring Water claims that their newly launched Montreal-based +1 brand bottled water bottle is made from corn plastic polylactic acid.
The container is a 100% recyclable resource and, according to Biota, the bottle is fully decomposable after 80 days under commercial composting conditions, whereas conventional plastic bottles are completely non-biodegradable.
The Canadian company said that their bottles are certified products that can reduce carbon dioxide emissions and reduce energy consumption by 68% compared to the production of ordinary plastics.
In addition, the company said that unlike the commonly used plastic water bottles, "the new bottles do not have petroleum by-products or chemicals that may leach into the water from PET bottles."
Carol Zweep, packaging services manager at the Food Technology Center in Guelph, Ontario, said that end-users’ interest in biodegradable packaging products is increasing.
Bottles made from different plastics blends are very difficult to recycle. Polymers must have similar components to mix well, which is difficult to separate as easily as oil and water during heat treatment.
