Four ways to effectively improve China's timber self-sufficiency
China can improve the self-sufficiency of timber and meet the needs of the domestic timber market by accelerating the cultivation of plantations, improving the comprehensive utilization rate of timber, promoting the conservation of wood and enhancing the recycling and recycling of waste wood. This is the proposal put forward by Sun Jian, the executive deputy director of the National Timber Industry Management Office of the State Forestry Administration, at the 3rd China (Putian) Wood Industry Investment and Trade Fair.
The 3rd China (Putian) Wood Industry Investment and Trade Fair was held in Putian City, Fujian Province from 8th to 10th. Sun Jian said: "Relying on the international market to make up for the insufficient supply of domestic timber and alleviating the contradiction between supply and demand of timber can only be used as a phased strategy and cannot be a long-term development strategy."
Sun Jian said that the means of accelerating the cultivation of artificial forests include expanding the planting area of artificial fast-growing forests, increasing the yield per unit area of artificial fast-growing forests and strengthening the cultivation of large-diameter precious tree species; and vigorously developing the bamboo industry to research and develop new bamboo composite materials. The development of shrub forests, the expansion of the processing and utilization of crop straw resources, the use of new technologies to extend the service life of wood, etc., can effectively promote the conservation of wood.
Sun Jian proposed that the enhancement of timber self-sufficiency should start from two aspects: improving the comprehensive utilization rate of wood and vigorously developing the conservation of wood. At present, {HotTag} China's comprehensive utilization rate of wood is only 60%, while developed countries have reached more than 80%, improve wood utilization, increase the use of harvesting and processing and sub-small fuelwood, and renovation of old houses and furniture. Recycling of large amounts of waste wood from newer, trendy decorations, etc., will save the country tens of millions of cubic meters of wood per year.
According to relevant statistics, in 2006 China imported 32 million cubic meters of logs, of which nearly 70% were imported from Russia.
China is a country with relatively scarce forest resources. The per capita forest area is less than one quarter of the world average, and the per capita forest stock is only one-eighth of the world average. At present, China's per capita wood consumption is still at a low level, and the per capita annual wood consumption is only 0.25 cubic meters, which is 43% of the world average and 10% of developed countries.
