Tips for layout design and printing of color newspapers
1. Use monochromatic characters for characters under the fourth size. Due to the fast printing speed of newspapers, the great flexibility of newsprint in water, the slight errors in imposition, printing, printing on the plate, and the performance problems of the printing machine, etc., may affect the overprint. If the characters below No. 4 are in more than two colors, the handwriting may be blurred due to inaccurate overprinting.
2. The text color and shading color should not exceed 3 colors.
Some art editors do not consider the characteristics of printing in color, and do whatever they want. The color or shading color of characters is superimposed with more than 3 basic colors, which not only wastes ink but also brings great difficulty to printing. We know that Y + M + C = K. In theory, the same proportion of Y, M, and C primary colors are superimposed on different proportions of gray, but on newspaper printing, any gray that is superimposed on Y, M, and C colors. All should be replaced by the corresponding proportion of pure gray.
3. Less use of large area dark shading.
Shading can play a role in beautifying the layout, but in the layout design of newspapers, the characteristics of newspaper printing should be considered. As newspapers are printed on newsprint, newsprint has high ink absorption and water absorption. If the shading area is too large and the color is too dark, more than 50%, it will inevitably cause the paper to wrinkle and even cause the printing to break. This is particularly evident in the printing of newspapers.
4. The same hue takes 10% as the step.
Newspaper printing is high-speed printing on newsprint, and the dot expansion rate is much larger than that of coated paper. Therefore, the color of the same hue is best to use 10% as a step to distinguish it more clearly. In addition, due to the expansion of the network, more than 80% of the same hue will not be much different.
5. Do not use small font size on the background of multi-color superposition.
The negative characters on the monochrome shading may be blurred due to printing paste. The negative characters on the multi-color shading are not clear due to overprinting errors. The fine strokes of Song No. 5 and so on and the negative characters below No. 5 are particularly prone to this problem.
Color separation of newsprint newsletter
The color separation of newsprint pictures must conform to the printing characteristics of newsprint. To make a high-quality picture separation, the difference between newsprint and art paper picture separation must be clear.
1. Calibration difference
What is calibration? Simply put, it is to determine the black and white field. The black and white field determines the range of tone levels of a picture. Pictures printed on coated paper have a larger tone range, generally 3% -97%, while pictures printed on newsprint are generally 5% -85%, with a smaller tone range. This means that when coloring newspaper pictures, the original tone must be compressed to remove gradations below 5%, that is, white, and gradations above 85%.
2. The selection of hierarchical curves is different
Since the expansion rate of newspaper printing outlets reaches 30% -35%, if the layers of pictures are not pulled apart, the printed newspaper will be very boring and unclear. If the color is separated by an electrical sub-machine, a color separation curve of newspaper images suitable for different types of originals must be designed. Generally, there are 3 standard curve: standard original curve, overexposed original curve, and underexposed original curve. If you use a scanner to scan color separations, such as Lino-Hell's S3400, Dopa, etc., the software itself has multiple gradation curves, as long as you select the corresponding curve scan for different originals, you will get better results.
3. The emphasis on clarity is different
The sharpness (sharpening) is not enough, the outline is not clear, and the picture is blurred; the sharpness is emphasized too much, and the outline of the picture is blunt. The quality of the sharpness control directly affects the color separation quality of the picture. For different types of pictures, it is necessary to find the appropriate sharpening level from practice.
4. The difference of black version
Compared to coated paper, the black version of newsprint should be a bit heavier, and choose "larger black version" in the PHOTOSHOP color separation settings. Due to the fast printing speed of newspapers, if the black version is smaller for the darker parts, the corresponding Y, M and C versions are heavier, which will inevitably cause drying problems and lead to smudging.
5. Different saturation
Due to the low whiteness of newsprint, the color should be more saturated than color-coated paper during color separation. Remove a small proportion of the opposite colors as much as possible, that is, the basic color should be as large as possible, and the opposite color should be as small as possible.
