Brief analysis of several analytical methods commonly used in carbon and sulfur analyzers

1. Infrared absorption method (infrared carbon and sulfur analyzer): The carbon and sulfur in the sample are heated to high temperature under oxygen-rich conditions and oxidized into carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide gas. After being processed, the gas enters the corresponding absorption cell, absorbs the corresponding infrared radiation, and is forwarded by the detector as a signal, which is processed and output by the computer. This method has the characteristics of accuracy, fastness, high sensitivity, and uses both high and low carbon and sulfur content. The infrared carbon and sulfur analyzer using this method has a higher degree of automation and a higher price.

2. Conductivity method (conductivity carbon and sulfur meter): This is a method for measuring and analyzing the carbon and sulfur content according to the change of conductivity. The mixed gas generated after the tested sample is burned at high temperature, after the absorption of the conductivity cell, the resistivity (Reciprocal of conductance) changes to determine the content of carbon and sulfur, which is characterized by accuracy, speed and sensitivity. Mostly used for the determination of low carbon and low sulfur.

3. Volumetric method (gas capacity carbon and sulfur analyzer): Commonly used for measuring carbon is gas volumetric method, sulfur is measured by iodometric method, acid-base titration method. In particular, the volumetric method for measuring sulfur in carbon and iodine is legal. It is both fast and accurate. It is the most commonly used method for the combined determination of carbon and sulfur in China. The accuracy of the carbon and sulfur analyzer using this method has a lower limit of carbon content of 0.030% The lower limit is 0.005%, which can meet the needs of most occasions.

4. Titration method (titrator): Non-water titrator is used to determine the carbon and sulfur elements in steel by acid-base titration method. Matching with electric arc burning furnace, it is suitable for general laboratory, pre-furnace test and so on.

5. Gravimetric method (carbon-sulfur combined measuring instrument): commonly used alkali asbestos absorbs carbon dioxide, and the carbon content is determined from the "increment". Sulfur is usually measured by wet method. The sample is decomposed and oxidized with acid to be converted into sulfate. Then barium chloride is added to the hydrochloric acid medium to produce barium sulfate. After precipitation, filtration, washing and burning, the sulfur is finally calculated and weighed The content. The disadvantage of the gravimetric method is that the analysis speed is slow, so it is impossible to use for on-site carbon and sulfur analysis. The advantage is that it has high accuracy. It is still recommended as a standard method at home and abroad, and is suitable for standard laboratories and research institutions.

6. Determination of carbon and sulfur content in metals, as well as ICP method, direct reading spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence method, mass spectrometry, chromatography, activation analysis, etc., each with its own advantages and scope of application.
