NASA wants to use 3D printers to manufacture spacecraft parts

Phoenix Digital News Beijing time on October 11th, although 3D printers have been practically applied in various environments, NASA clearly has more ambitious goals. The agency recently announced that next year they will launch 3D printers into space to help astronauts “print” components and related tools in a zero-gravity environment.

Last week, private company Made In Space announced that it had prepared the model for the most critical round of testing. NASA commissioned this company to develop 3D printer technology that can be used in a zero-gravity environment. To prove how close the technology is to us, Made In Space reproduced the entire process of the fatal failure of the Apollo 13 in 1970 to show that 3D printers can solve this dangerous problem within minutes.

In real missions, crews of the Apollo 13 had been forced to temporarily make a carbon dioxide filter holder from plastic bags and tape. With 3D printing technology, the same parts can be copied anywhere, anytime.

This summer, Made In Space teamed up with NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center to test 3D-printed components on four microgravity flights (each lasting two hours each time) while simulating the appearance in regular space flights. Various conditions. The 3D printing experiment under zero gravity not only validated the effectiveness of the concept of manufacturing spacecraft components under zero gravity, but also created possibilities for endless innovation exploration.

If this launch is successful, this will be the first practical application of a 3D printer in a zero-gravity environment. NASA hopes that this move will ultimately reduce future space launch costs. Aaron Kemmer, CEO of Made In Space, said: “We can imagine that astronauts must perform important maintenance on the International Space Station. We no longer hope that the necessary spare parts and tools will be available on the International Space Station. On the contrary, we can use 3D printing technology to manufacture them once we need them. What kind of scenario would it be?”

Dave Korsmeyer, director of engineering at NASA's Ames Research Center, said: "If you want to keep up with the times, you must design and build components on the fly. In this case, 3D printing technology will play an important role.” This new innovation will not only bring direct benefits, but it will also have a far-reaching impact on the future development of humanity.

Mike Snyder of 3D Print Experiment and Lead Design Engineer of 3D Printing Technology stated: “The future development of human beings will ultimately depend on our ability to explore and conquer space. It was developed in our zero gravity flight experiment. And testing 3D printing technology will be the cornerstone of creating this future. With the success of these tests, we have achieved a milestone in the goal of laying this foundation stone.”

Noah Paul-Gin of Microgravity Experiment Lead said: “The 3D printer we developed for the International Space Station will reduce the astronauts’ dependence on the ground. It will be shipped to the International Space Station next year. The space station manufactures about 30% of parts, as well as various items such as special tools and experimental upgrade equipment."
