AntiVJ makes album art with 3D printed visual sound waves

In the past, most iconic famous music albums, such as the Beatles' Abbey Road, had an iconic album cover. But nowadays, because many consumers prefer to download music from the Internet, the art of designing and marketing music through art has lost some attention.

However, the European visual brand AntiVJ has been dedicated to organically combining music and visual effects through device art presentations. Recently, AntiVJ collaborated with Brussels musician Thomas Vaquié to create a unique and technical album cover for Vaquié's album Ecume with the help of 3D printing .

The black cover of Ecume is undoubtedly amazing, but what interests us most is the way the cover is made. To fully integrate art and music, AntiVJ collaborated with Swiss artist Yannick Jacquet to create an album cover based on the actual sound of the album's music. With a custom digital visualization tool, Jacquet can analyze songs on Vaquié albums and turn them into visual sound waves, or they can be called “sound wave landscapes”.

This produces a 3D model of the acoustic landscape, which is then printed in 3D. The 3D printing model is in turn used to make a silicone mold, which is then used to make a cement model. The lights are then hit on the cement model in a specific way, and the photographer then takes a shot to capture the album cover. In order to mimic and preserve the rough texture of the concrete as much as possible, the final photo has a matte and laminated portion. In this way, an abstract and completely amazing cover design is finally completed. Through a lunar surface, the album cover echoes the music on the album.

AntiVJ said that they have been trying to show how the music itself can stimulate imagination, and this project is part of this effort. “AntiVJ wants to reaffirm the ability of the sound itself to inspire imagination,” a spokesman for AntiVJ said.

Interestingly, Vaquié is also inspired by the visual means to get the music itself. Many of the songs on the album were created for AntiVJ's art installations. According to AntiVJ, every trajectory has been rewritten as "a response to places and spaces, to light and architecture, to code and movement." Later, the music on the album seemed to be restored to these specific elements for the album cover. The design provided inspiration.

It is said that in addition to the cover film made of vinyl, AntiVJ also released a limited edition series. The series contains 25 album covers, but each version is different and is made of black resin. They have a rougher, textured, terrain-like surface, each with a retail price of €90 ($100), while a regular vinyl cover costs only €24 ($26.50).
