New targets for improving wound healing

Researchers at the Goethe University in Frankfurt have now succeeded in achieving this, with the help of light-induced antibiotics to treat wound healing damage.

MicroRNAs are small gene segments that are bonded to a target structure in a cell, in this way preventing the formation of certain proteins. Because they play a key role in the development and performance of various diseases, researchers have developed so-called antibodies that block microRNA function. However, this method has the disadvantage of causing side effects throughout the body, as microRNAs can perform different functions in various organs. Researchers at the Goethe University in Frankfurt have now solved this problem.

The research team led by Professor Alex Heckel and Professor Stefanie Dimmeler of the Frankfurt Institute of Macromolecular Complexes developed an antioxidant that can be activated very efficiently in a limited local area by using light of a specific wavelength. To this end, the antioxidant is locked in a photosensitive molecular cage that decomposes upon exposure to light of a particular wavelength.

As a means of testing the efficacy of these new antibacterial drugs, the researchers chose microRNA-92a as the target structure. This condition often occurs in diabetic patients with chronic trauma. They inject the antibodies in the light-sensitive cage into the skin of the mouse and then release the therapeutic agent into the tissue by means of light. Together, these teams demonstrated that effective activation of microRNA-92a can help wound healing.
